Almost 17 years after leaving for London, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman remains at the center of political discussions in Bangladesh. Following a meeting in London with Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, fresh speculation has arisen about when Rahman will finally return home.
Reports in Bangladeshi media suggest that preparations are underway at his residence in Dhaka. However, questions persist — why hasn’t Tarique Rahman returned yet, even though more than 10 months have passed since the government was ousted on August 5, 2024?
Since the political shift, Rahman has reportedly been cleared of nearly all legal charges against him, including acquittals from high-profile cases like the August 21 grenade attack case. Government officials have publicly stated that there are no longer any legal or administrative obstacles preventing his return.
BBC Bangla has been investigating not only the reasons for the delay but also Tarique Rahman’s future plans regarding his homecoming and upcoming political strategy ahead of Bangladesh’s next general election.
